Making a purchase via your computer is just as safe as making a purchase over the phone. Just as with mail-order purchasing there are reliable merchants, and others whom you might not trust so readily.

The huge advantage of Tiscali's online shopping centre, is that only recognised high quality merchants are represented. This means that our merchants would not misuse your credit card details, or take money from your credit card account without dispatching the goods to your delivery address.

All our merchants offer a secure payment environment which means that when you type in credit card details they will be put into code, making it very difficult for any third party to obtain the information. You will receive a message that states you are entering a secure environment whenever you are about to type in your payment details. These encryption methods are the same as those used in the software systems of mail order or high street shops when they take your card details and are just as safe.

If you find something you would like to purchase but have not heard of the merchant, or they appear to be registered elsewhere than in the UK, there are a number of checks you can make to ensure your purchase is safe.

Paying by credit card gives you extra protection. If you buy goods costing between £100 and �30,000 the credit card issuer is jointly responsible with the supplier for misrepresentation and breach of contract. So if goods malfunction, are damaged, or don't arrive, you can ask your credit card company to assist you in recovering the loss, just as you could if this happened when buying over the phone.

Debit cards do not have this added protection.
